The World We Make

Finding our way through differences to build something better together.
Our differences are real, and they matter. But we still have to find a way to live, work, and build a future together. A future where everyone can have what they need to live a good life, feel that they belong, and live in peace with one another.

Finding our way through differences to build something better together.
Our differences are real, and they matter. But we still have to find a way to live, work, and build a future together. A future where everyone can have what they need to live a good life, feel that they belong, and live in peace with one another.
THE CHALLENGE
We are living through a time of profound division and disconnection. We increasingly sort ourselves into sides. We retreat into circles where people think and live like we do, while trust in one another continues to erode.
It becomes easy to assume we know what someone believes, what they value, or even whether they're a good person based on a political affiliation, an identity, a religion, where they live, or a single opinion.
At the same time, many of us feel lonely and disconnected. We have fewer places to really get to know each other, especially people whose lives and experiences are different from our own.
But we share communities, institutions, problems, and a future. We need to find ways to live and work together without pretending our differences don't matter. Division comes at a cost. We make it harder to solve problems, strengthen our communities, and build a better future together.

Our Approach
The good news is that we get to choose how we respond to the division around us. The World We Make creates opportunities to learn from new ideas and perspectives, gather to discuss difficult questions together, and practice ways of building more connection and belonging in our everyday lives.

Learn
We learn from stories and perspectives that challenge our assumptions and expand how we see the world.
We look at what divides us, what connects us, and what we can learn from experiences and perspectives beyond our own.
You'll find original essays and conversations from The World We Make, along with other work we think is worth exploring.

Practice
We put what we're exploring into practice in our everyday lives.
We look for concrete ways to build connection, stay curious, strengthen our communities, and recognize the humanity in people even when it's difficult.
You'll find ideas and practices you can try in your own relationships, conversations, and community.
Discussion Group
Cherished Belonging
Some questions are better explored together. The Cherished Belonging Discussion Group is a place to talk about belonging, division, dignity, justice, community, and how we live together across our differences.
The group began with Father Gregory Boyle's book Cherished Belonging, which inspired the name. But you don't have to read a whole book to participate. Each gathering focuses on something worth discussing, whether it's a book, article, video, podcast, or important question.
We use BookClubs.com to organize our gatherings, but we're really a discussion group. Come with your perspective, an open mind, and a willingness to listen.
What Kind of World Are we Making?
The world we live in isn't shaped only by governments, institutions, or the biggest conflicts of our time. We shape it too, in our communities, our relationships, and the ways we respond to people whose experiences and beliefs differ from our own.
Every conversation, every act of curiosity, every choice to listen instead of assume is small. But together, those choices help shape the communities we live in and the future we're building.
The question isn't whether we're making the world around us. We already are. The question is what kind of world we want to make together.

Hi, I'm Michelle.
I'm here because I keep coming back to the question: How do we respond to the very real problems in our world without losing sight of each other's humanity?
I started The World We Make because I wanted a place to explore that question through stories, conversations, research, and attempts to put these ideas into practice.
I'm also interested in how we create more places of genuine connection and belonging, where people feel seen, valued, and part of something larger than themselves.
I don't think any one person has the answers. But I believe we can keep learning, listening, and experimenting with ways to build something better together.
Because the world we want isn't something we're going to find. It's something we need to make.
